New EU organic logo postponed

The proposed EU organic logo

The introduction of the much heralded new EU organic logo has been put off until 2010 because of it's similarity to the logo used on organic food by the Aldi supermarket chain.

Despite their almost identical appearance, it was only when an organic farming association at the advisory group on organic farming pointed out the similarity of the logos, that alarm bells began to ring in the commission. One wonders how much public money was wasted on this fiasco.

A competition, open to all EU citizens, will be launched this summer to design a new logo which will replace the current one and its introduction will be delayed for a year to allow time to select a suitable design.
