New study shows that organic food is better
A study funded by the European Union over four years showed that, in general, organic food contains less fatty acids and more antioxidants.
The study, led by Newcastle University, was carried out on organic and non-organic sites across Europe and on a farm attached to the university. A range of fruit, vegetables and livestock were produced studied. Organic wheat, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, onions and lettuce had 20% to 40% more nutrients. Levels of antioxidants in organic milk were between 50% and 80% higher than in conventional milk.
The findings have led to calls for the Food Safety Authority in the UK to revise its opinion on organic food which states that the balance of scientific opinion does not support the view that organic food is safer and more nutritious.
