GM feed conference
The European Comite des Regions, organised a two-day conference on Non-GM feedstuff, quality production and European regional agriculture strategy.
The speakers came from various regions in the EU and elsewhere to discuss the issue of non-GM feedstuff. Two messages came across specifically - one is that there is plenty of non-GM feedstuff in the market place. At present up to 60% of soya is not non-GM. The price is marginally higher than GM feedstuff. Secondly, the voice of the European consumer is still very much anti GM food - up to 70% in most countries. The reports from various regions in France, Italy, Germany and Austria illustrated that the consumer demanded non-GM feedstuff both in the conventional and organic sectors. It is important that this information is directed towards the producers so that we can keep GM feedstuff out of the food chain.
