The National Organic Training Skillnet (NOTS) was set up in 2008 to provide a low cost training option for the commercial development of organic production throughout the country. The programme is a joint venture between the Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association, the Organic Trust and the Western Organic Network.
The training programme will run to the end of 2009 addressing the training needs of organic and aspiring organic operators and also delivering academic courses through distance learning programmes to master's degree standard. The courses provided are flexible in their geographic location, dates and course duration. The programme aims to train 891 people in organic techniques and skills over the two years. Training is also available to commercial organic businesses with in-house training needs.
To date over 300 people have taken part in training from practical growing skills in vegetable production, cereal growing and livestock management and marketing. In addition to our ongoing training, NOTS are planning to host a range of evening discussions or seminars on different aspects of organic production from horticulture to pigs and beef and sheep throughout October. We are also working with other agencies to provide information seminars in the Cavan and Kerry area on what is involved in converting to organic production.
