Ladybird Organic Farm in Tipperary believes in rewarding customers who make that extra effort to buy organic. All cyclists who come shopping on their bikes to the Ladybird Organic Farm stall at Farmers' Markets in Tipperary get a 10% reduction on their purchases of home-grown eggs, beef and pork until the end of May and can feel virtuous about reducing their carbon footprint into the bargain.
The ever-innovative Richard Auler and Stella Coffey take their environmental responsibilities seriously and have installed solar-powered henhouses at their farm. “Life, and food production is geared towards minimising negative environmental effects”, says Stella. “The hens roost in cute wooden solarpowered hen-houses; the Angus cattle are suckled until naturally weaned and then solely grass-fed; the pigs eat what the farm produces itself, supplemented by some bought-in grain; the manure from all the animals is the basis of the fields' ongoing fertility. The small flocks and herds don't overburden the land so that the farm can naturally cycle its own biological activity. We also use solarheated water and plan to power the farm with wind energy soon”.
