Make and Do Yourself Good
Forget Sex in the City. It’s Bees in the City – urban beekeeping, shoe repairs and jewellery lessons. Supermarket food bills running sky high? Cut out air miles, nasty pesticides and get fit with a workshop on organic gardening. Want to save money on taxi fares? Why not drag that old bike out of the garage and get down to Cultivate in Dublin’s Temple Bar on Saturday June 13th for some bike mending tips.
In these recessionary times independence and self-sustainability become more important than ever. As ever the folks at Cultivate in Dublin’s Temple Bar are on hand to provide advice on healthy, sustainable living. June 13th sees Make: Day – a day of workshops and exhibits intended to up-skill members of the public, allowing them to learn new skills and enhance their lives and their pockets by becoming more self-sufficient.
“In these challenging times we need to learn, or re-learn, how to do a lot of the things we have been able to buy,” says Davie Philip, one of the event co-ordinators for Make: Day and education officer at Cultivate. “As we move from being solely consumers we will need to nurture a DIY ethic, to value re-use and we will have to be a lot more resourceful. It’s time to skill up for the power down.”
Workshops on the day will include hemp and lime building, basic carpentry, natural paint making, shoe making, keeping bees in the city, basket making, soap making, jewellery making, composting, organic gardening and much more. For information on Make: Day go to www.cultivate.ie or phone 01 6745773.
