Organic Dairy Group Launched

A new organic milk producers group has been set up to cater for small to medium size organic dairy enterprises. “The aim of the group is to process locally, have small outlets and give employment locally,” said Pat Mulrooney, spokesman for the group and one of Ireland’s long standing organic dairy farmers.

At present, the bulk of organic milk produced goes to Glenisk for processing and there will be no diminution in the supply available to the company. “Current arrangement will remain in place and this will allow for expansion in organic milk production and encourage more farmers to convert,” says Pat. “In some respects, we have lost contact with the consumer and this will give family businesses the chance to market the benefits of their production system locally. We are talking about non-intensive, grass based milk production where cows graze outdoors for ten months of the year and we want to highlight the benefits of this system to consumers”.

The group will initially produce liquid milk followed by cheese at a later date. Significant progress has been made and the group hopes to make a major announcement within weeks.
