A first for Castlefarm
Kildare's first farmhouse cheese was launched recently at Taste Kildare.
Enterprising local organic farmers, Jenny and Peter Young made Castlefarm Cheese in June with milk from the Young's Narraghmore based dairy herd.
Jenny said "our cheese is a gouda, made with milk produced by our cows, eating only natural, green grass. Castlefarm Natural and Castlefarm Shamrock are the first Kildare farmhouse cheeses. Castlefarm Natural is a plain, milky cheese and Castlefarm Shamrock is a nutty flavoured cheese made with Fenugreek. Both our cheeses are covered in a distinctive green wax."
Castlefarm Cheese is on sale at Castlefarm Shop and at Jenny's cheese stall, Athy Farmers Market.
The Young's farm at Narraghmore, Athy will receive full organic status this October. Jenny and Peter's farm shop has become a well known food destination in Kildare and sells its own range of vegetables, free range eggs and seasonal chutneys and jams as well as other locally produced and good Irish food.
Castlefarm offers group tours of the farm as well as cookery demonstrations and producer talks.
