New Irish Seed Supplier

A new organic seed supplier will be available to choose from for the 2010 season. Horizon Farm in Kinsale, Co. Cork run by Colum and Liz O’ Regan will be providing seeds from their brand new online shop, horizonfarm.com, which will be up and running from mid-January 2010. This new seed business came about from discussions with the well known Europrise Seed Company in Dublin.

Europrise had difficulty in supplying some seeds in the pack sizes required by the small and medium size market garden. After discussion with Colum they agreed that there was an opportunity to service this part of the market more effectively. Horizon Farm will supply seeds form the Vitalis, Bejo and Enza organic and non-chemically treated (nct) catalogues. This will include a selection of the very successful organic pelleted lettuce seed range.

Colum finds that pelleted seeds provide excellent germination rates and better quality plant plugs than unpelleted seeds. Taking things a step further, organic growers will also be able to sell the organic and nct seed range from their own farm shop, health food shop or farmers market stand. A separate area of the website is dedicated to the supply of smaller retail packs of seeds. Colum feels this could be a very useful addition to any grower’s stand early in the year.

It should provide useful income during the “hungry gap” and help draw more people onto the market stand. It should also help the grower get some income from the horticultural advice that currently is given for free!
