New EU Organic Logo to be Selected
The public is invited to choose the long awaited EU organic logo through on-line voting before the end of January, 2010. The three final designs (see picture) were chosen from an entry of 3,422 submitted by art and design students.

Agriculture Commissioner, Mariann Fischer Boel said “Through this online vote, the European Commission wants to ensure that the new logo appeals to as many people as possible. At the same time, this open selection process contributes to the bigger objective of making people aware of the importance of the organic farming sector.”
The new logo will be compulsory on all pre-packed products with organic status in the EU. Members of the public can vote by logging on to www.ec.europa.eu/organic-logo and casting their votes before the end of January. The design brief for the logo specified “an eye-catching and original logo that captures the diverse aspects of organic farming and production”.
Reaction from the organic community to the final designs has ranged from the negative to the downright unprintable. A straw poll of twelve producers carried out by Organic Matters could find no one who liked the designs. A ‘nil points’ in this case for the up and coming designers of the future!
