New Logo for EU Organic Products

Following an online vote, the new EU organic logo has been selected. The winner of the competition is the leaf shape consisting of the EU stars (see picture). The designer is Dusan Milenkovic, a student from Germany, who gained 63% of the overall 130,000 votes.

The three final designs were severely criticized by the organic sector internationally for not meeting the criteria laid down in the selection process. The design brief sought “an eye-catching and original logo that captures the diverse aspects of organic farming and production”. Many feel that the existing EU logo was better suited to the purpose and that the competition was a waste of time and resources.

From 1st July, 2010, the organic logo of the EU will be obligatory on all pre-packaged organic products that have been produced in any of EU Member States and meet the necessary standards. It will be optional for imported products. Other private, regional or national logos will be allowed to appear alongside the EU label. The organic farming regulation will be amended in the coming weeks to incorporate the new logo.

The winner of the competition and second and third prize winners will be honoured by the European Commission's Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development at an official award ceremony that will take place in Brussels in July 2010. The three winners will receive prizes of €6,000, €3,500 and €2,500.
