Coolanowle Wins Award
Organic farmers Jim and Bernadine Mulhall are the winners of the Georgina Campbell’s Farmhouse of the Year Award for 2012. Their organic farm, quality organic food, accommodation and health treatments have acquired an excellent reputation in recent years, making them deserving winners of the award. “We were delighted to get the award,” says Bernadine. “It gives us a great boost in the current economic climate and it keeps us focused”.
Georgina Campbell describes the farm as “an ideal family holiday destination, or for people of any age who enjoy rural life. There are so many good things about Coolanowle that it can be difficult to decide what to focus on, but their home-produced organic food and traditional home cooking has to be the trump card, especially as it is served with a generous dose of genuine hospitality – tea with home bakes on arrival, great breakfasts, dinner by arrangement – even a traditional Sunday lunch featuring joints of their own organic meats”.
“It’s a tough time for people in the hospitality industry and many businesses are on their knees,” says Bernadine. “It’s difficult to compete with hotel rates which have dropped hugely”. She expects a good uptake on Christmas gift vouchers that Coolanowle provide and she has also diversified into catering for small wedding parties and private functions. “Everyone has to work harder to keep business levels up but we are confident that more Irish people holidaying at home will want to enjoy a taste of rural Irish life and we are delighted to welcome them to our farm,” says Bernadine.
