Organic Matters Magazine - September / October 2007 edition

Despite a poor agricultural year, the organic sector has grounds for optimism.

The word 'organic' is increasingly used and understood and media coverage grows daily. Demand for produce is at an all time high and, following the announcement of the new organic farming scheme, it is anticipated that many more farmers will consider the organic option in an effort to maintain a livelihood on the land. For the first time, the sector has a government Minister in charge who uses organic methods in his own garden and has a genuine belief in the benefits of the organic system.

International market analysts too are predicting that organic production is about to break out of its alternative niche and go mainstream. This is welcome news for those who have always considered it the normal way to farm.

As IOFGA celebrates its 25th anniversary it is an opportune time to present its strategy for the development of the sector up to 2012. The policy document which was presented to the Minister has received wide coverage in recent weeks and the main points are shown on pages 29-31. Most organic producers can easily list the main requirements for the development of the sector but this plan demonstrates that a revitalised organic sector will also benefit a range of areas including climate, environment, health, nutrition, tourism and the overall Irish economy.

The IOFGA annual general meeting will be held in November, and in order to make it a memorable anniversary, all members are invited to participate and contribute to the success of the occasion.
